Clyde Williams took the reins as Iowa State's head football coach in 1907. A three-sport standout in college, Williams began his coaching career as an Iowa State football assistant in 1906. His 1907 squad of fresh-faced go-getters surprised many as it notched a 7-1 record and defended its state championship title with wins over Drake and Iowa. Williams coached the Cyclone football team until 1912; in 1914 he became athletics director and oversaw the building of a new football stadium which would bear his name. The stadium, which closed its doors in 1974, was located at the site which is currently home to the Union Drive suites, just west of Clyde's Sports Club. Today this restaurant is a tribute to the man who laid a firm foundation for ISU athletics and to all the great athletes, coaches, and fans who were part of the excitement of Clyde Williams Field.
